The School Of Alberta Ballet Professional Division
The School of Alberta Ballet is the official training centre of Alberta Ballet. With facilities, including classrooms and studios, in the heart of downtown Calgary and a residence that provides a home away from home for out of province and international students, the School of Alberta Ballet provides each student with the dance, life and academic skills to launch a professional career.
Led by Artistic Principal Ashley McNeil and exceptional faculty, the Professional Division is designed to train students for a career in dance. The School of Alberta Ballet sees each student as truly unique, and works with each dancer, helping them to reach their full potential.
Secondary School Artistic and Academic Programs
Junior School (grades 7-9)
The Junior School sees a progression of training to establish the basics of classical ballet, correct posture, turnout, coordination, development of the leg and foot muscles and carriage of the arms. Pointe work is gradually introduced into the program and Cecchetti Syllabus Examination work is introduced. Workshop and repertoire classes are added as training progresses.
Senior School (grades 10-12)
From grades 10 to 12, the program of daily classical ballet classes is complimented with a strong contemporary dance component, ensuring the student becomes familiar and is well equipped in many movement forms and has gained the ability to withstand the rigours of today's international companies. Class work includes pointe classes for female students, virtuosity classes for male students, Pas de deux, repertoire, variations, body conditioning and, until grade 11, character classes.
Admission to the School of Alberta Ballet’s Professional Division is solely talent-based with successful candidates being chosen through our Summer Intensive, via the annual International Audition Tour. Scholarships must be applied for separately.
In the summer of 2016, the School of Alberta Ballet started a new and exciting partnership with the National Ballet School of Canada, launching a partnership through an annual student exchange. This partnership will bring students of both schools access to different teachers, styles and approaches, encourgaing further growth and experience for our students.
