Maria Crothers, RAD RTS
Head of Open Division, Calgary Studios
Maria Crothers is a fully registered teacher of the Royal Academy of Dance with over 20 years of teaching experience. She has acted as Ballet Director for six studios in southern Alberta and has taught for both the Professional Division and Open Division programs at the School of Alberta Ballet. Mrs. Crothers studied dance at the Edmonton School of Ballet and The University of Alberta and has had the privilege of studying with renowned RAD and Cecchetti teachers and examiners. Her training includes study in Ballet (RAD & Cecchetti methods encompassing Pointe, Repertoire and Pas de Deux), ISTD National, Modern, Jazz, Lyrical, Highland and Musical Theatre. Mrs. Crothers continues to pursue her dance training and knowledge of new teaching techniques through various workshops, courses and seminars. As well as working as a mentor for young teachers with the Royal Academy of Dance CBTS program.
As a teacher and choreographer, Mrs. Crothers has trained dancers, with great success, toward both graded and vocational examinations, competitions and performances, and has worked with professionals to help hone their skills. Students training with Mrs. Crothers have gone on to professional careers as dancers, performers and as teachers. She has also been recognized with various achievement awards for her choreography over the years.
As well as teaching, Mrs. Crothers has worked in the field of Physical and Rehabilitation Therapy and has found the application of this experience to her teaching to be a great asset in the molding of young people's bodies.
Her goal is to establish a strong foundation of ballet technique for her students, developing a passion for and love of dance in all its forms and an appreciation of each student's uniqueness and abilities. In 2013, Mrs. Crothers was appointed the Head of Open Division for the School of Alberta Ballet, alongside Julie Coleman.
